Enjoy a day out at sea in the Loviisa archipelago.

S/Y Amathea offers unforgettable sailing experiences in the beautiful archipelago of Loviisa and Pellinge in the eastern Gulf of Finland

The home port is Isnäs in Pernajanlahti Bay. The longest trips with beginner sailors take us to the waters of Kotka and to Porvoo – following old historical routes while exploring the archipelago and its way of life.

We will take you and your group on an unforgettable trip to the archipelago, where the sea, silence, and unique nature create the perfect setting for a break from everyday life. Each trip is always planned according to the group’s wishes, whether it is a company team, a group of friends, or a family adventure.

We hike in the destinations of the Uusimaa Outdoor Recreation Association as well as in Loviisa and Rönnäs.

We specialize in introductory sailing instruction and excursions suitable for sailors of all levels. Welcome to enjoy a maritime adventure with us!

Learn to sail safe and sound!

.First steps into sailing

The basics of sailing are best learned on a beginner’s course.

The most important things are understanding the direction of the wind, knowing the basic parts of the boat, handling the ropes, and following safe practices in the harbor and at sea. Calm practice in light winds builds confidence and trust in one’s own skills.

A safe archipelago trip for beginners

Exploring the archipelago starts with careful route planning and monitoring the weather. Short legs, sheltered routes, and well-equipped guest harbors are ideal for beginners. Life jackets, charts, drinking water, and warm clothing are always part of the gear, even for a short trip.

Unhurried progress and the joy of learning

Learning to sail and explore the archipelago is a process in which skills grow with every trip. When goals are kept modest and safety comes first, experience accumulates naturally and being at sea becomes a relaxing hobby. Shared experiences, the peace of nature, and the scenery of the archipelago reward every new enthusiast.

Sailing and camping in the archipelago can be started completely without any prior experience. A safe beginning is created when the basics are learned calmly, in the right order, and with the support of an experienced instructor. A clear plan, suitable equipment, and the right attitude make the first days at sea pleasant and educational.

S/Y Amathea

Elizabethan 31 is a British classic sailing yacht, known especially for its robust construction and ability to handle open sea conditions. It is 31 feet long (approx. 9.5 metres) and was originally designed in the late 1960s. Key features of the yacht include:
  • Classic design: A traditionally lined “English beauty” with a long keel in many versions, which makes it stable and tracks well under sail.
  • Seaworthiness: Classified as suitable for ocean passages (offshore cruiser) and renowned for its durability even in demanding weather conditions.
  • Construction and versions: Built both with a traditional sloop rig and as a ketch (two masts). The hull is typically made of GRP, which was becoming a common material at the time of its production.
  • Intended use: Ideally suited to cruising and even longer sailing passages.

The yacht was designed by David Thomas, and was built at several different yards (such as Peter Webster Ltd) mainly during the 1960s and 1970s.

Amathea skipper Juha

Honouring traditions and the sea

"A northern sailor through many generations"

Juha Näri is the skipper of Amathea and a sailing instructor whose heart beats for classic sailing and a sustainable way of life. His approach combines traditional seamanship, calm analytical thinking and a deep respect for the sea. The Elizabethan 31 he skippers is more than just a means of transport; it is a tribute to timeless British boatbuilding craftsmanship. As a sailor, Juha feels at home in the local waters of the Pernaja archipelago, but the sturdy construction of the Elizabethan also makes safe offshore passages possible. Whether it is a peaceful evening sail or a more demanding passage, safety, clarity and the genuine joy of sailing are always at the heart of a voyage under Juha’s command.
